How Comfort Works
Sunshine Alley calculates comfort around the heat source warming you. Arrange your furniture around the fire, then enjoy its comfort anywhere that source can warm you while you are sheltered.
The basic calculation
Your situation | Comfort level |
|---|---|
Outdoors, even near heat | 1 |
Sheltered without heat | 2 |
Sheltered and receiving heat | 2 + the best heat source’s furniture score |
If several heat sources warm you at once, each source gets its own furniture score. Only the highest score is used. Their scores do not add together.
Which furniture counts?
Each heat source checks comfort items less than 10 metres from its centre.
Distance includes height: furniture upstairs or downstairs can count.
Walls and floors do not block furniture contributions.
An item exactly 10 metres away is outside the range.
Distance is measured from the item’s placement position.
For fireplaces, the range is centred on the fireplace itself. Other heat sources use the position of their heat area.
You do not have to stand within 10 metres of every furniture item yourself. You need shelter and must be receiving heat from the source whose furniture score you want to use. The source’s normal heating range still applies.
How furniture scores are added
The usual comfort groups and item values still apply:
Within a comfort group, the highest-value item counts. Adding several chairs does not stack their comfort.
Duplicate copies of the same item do not stack.
Different items without a shared comfort group can contribute together.
Items with an active-state requirement contribute according to their normal rules.
Fire comfort is included in the furniture score. Do not add another fire bonus afterward. Multiple fires in the same comfort group compete using the normal grouping rules.
Some pieces, such as the bonfire, normally provide their furniture comfort even when unlit. They still follow that rule, but you must receive heat from an active source to benefit from its furniture score.
Example
Suppose you are sheltered and two heat sources are warming you:
Heat source | Furniture score |
|---|---|
Source A | 8 |
Source B | 12 |
Your comfort is:
2 + 12 = 14 comfort
Furniture around Source A cannot be combined with furniture around Source B to create a larger total. Each source is scored separately.
Building tips
Put your best combination of comfort items within 10 metres of your main heat source. Use different comfort groups and upgrade weaker items instead of adding duplicates.
Furniture can be placed behind walls or on another floor, provided it remains within the three-dimensional range. Leave some room inside the boundary to avoid placement differences putting an item out of range.
The displayed comfort level normally refreshes about every two seconds, so allow a moment after changing furniture or moving between heat sources.
This update changes how comfort is calculated. The usual requirements for Resting and the way comfort determines Rested duration remain unchanged.
